Studies show that while over 40% of people make New Year’s Resolutions, more than 8 out 10 people actually end up throwing in the towel by the end of January. And most of those people who are still sticking to their guns eventually fall by the wayside by the end of the year.

So, are we telling you to drop everything and hit the sack because your fitness resolutions are doomed to fail anyway?

Don’t set yourself up to fail. Instead, take your resolutions for a test drive and if you feel overwhelmed, dial it down. Take the time to pick the right resolutions, because right resolutions turn into habits. And don’t forget to keep your chin up!

Another obstacle to achieving what you want is an unwillingness to take things one day at a time. Many people expect to see progress immediately and get discouraged if they don’t experience a miracle. Before long, they hang up their boots.

Instead of giving up, accept that progress takes time. Whether you signed up for a gym membership, paid for a diet plan, or simply made yourself a promise, you have to work every day for what you want to achieve. Because when the going gets tough, the tough get going! Don’t obsess over the distant future; you will get discouraged. Do keep your eyes on the prize but don’t take to your heels just because you don’t see immediate results.

Finally, don’t beat yourself up. Many people get caught in the vicious cycle of attempted resolutions and failed goals. You need to accept that the ball’s in your court, and you need to take the bull by the horns. If you find yourself faltering, recognize that it’s not the end of the world. Once you’ve started, you can never be back at square one. Temporary lapses are all right, as long as you brush it off and get back in the game.
